When the snow falls in Laurelton, it turns our community into a beautiful Winter Wonderland but it is also the responsibility of the home owner to clear their sidewalk and property so residents are safe walking in the neighborhood. According to the Department of Sanitation residents are responsible  for snow removal for the specific time period:

If the snow stops falling between:

• 7:00 a.m. and 4:49 p.m. – you must clear within four hours

  • 5:00 p.m. and 8:59 p.m. – you must clear within fourteen hours. For Example: If the snow stops falling at 7:00 p.m., the owner, lessee, tenant, occupant or other person in charge of any lot or building has until 9:00 a.m. the following morning to clear.
  • • 9:00 p.m. and 6:59 a.m. – you must clear by 11:00 a.m. the next day

You can  learn more about what your responsibilities are as a homeowner at the following link.

As a home owner, I know it’s my responsibility to make sure the sidewalk is safe for pedestrians in the community but it can be challenging if you do not have a support system in place to help with snow removal. Councilman Donovan Richards has provided for senior residents a snow removal service through the Wildcat Foundation. I was lucky enough to receive free support from my fellow neighbor, Ishaq Cooke. Mr. Cooke has lived in Laurelton with his family since 2003. He is currently studying at York College and is a Biology Major /Theater Minor  . Ishaq helped me remove the snow at my corner house and refused to accept a tip or payment. There are wonderful civic minded young people living in Laurelton and they should be celebrated.

Mr. Cooke represents the kind of qualities we want all of our children to grow up with in our community. I commend his family for raising their son to care about his community. Ishaq will be starring in a play at York College Theatre titled  “ Reasons To Be Pretty” by Neil Labute. The play will run from March 23-27 and you can get tickets here.
