The Linden SDA School sixth grade class girls created a fundraiser selling handmade rubber band bracelets to help the people who were affected by Hurricane Irma.
The hurricane caused catastrophic damage and fatalities throughout parts of the Caribbean and the Florida Keys. The Building Bracelet Fundraiser, as it was called, was founded by Akeelah Smikle and Ashley- Ann Francis, sixth grade students. They thought of this idea while they were making and selling handmade bracelets for $1 to their sixth grade classmate. They decided to expand their business to the entire school for a greater cause. All sale profits made from the bracelets would go to help with Hurricane Irma relief.
Smikle and Francis set a goal to raise $10 in bracelet sales. They recruited volunteers students from the sixth grade class who wanted to help with their fundraiser. Flyers were posted throughout the school to advertise the fundraiser. They were both surprised to see how many students wanted to buy their bracelets. Maya Mitchell, a sixth grade volunteer sales person said, ” I am glad that we did this fundraiser because it feels good to have done something that could change someone’s life. I hope the money we raised goes to people who really need it.”
In total the girls raised $50. The funds that were collected went to purchasing supplies for hurricane victims.
